Heart of the Matter

And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. Ezekial 36:26 (NLT)

Lord, soften our hearts
To Your will alone.
Pour out Your glory,
Remove hearts of stone.

Kindle our hearts, Lord
With Holy desires,
Craving the Spirit’s
Unquenchable fires.

Lord, inspect our hearts,
Convict as you see.
Not as we often
Pretend things to be.

Incline our hearts, Lord
To love Your instruction.
Swiftly removing
All deadly obstructions.

Lord, grant divine grace
True wisdom impart,
Binding Your mercy,
In our stubborn hearts.

Prepare our hearts, Lord
To walk in Your ways,
To live and to learn,
And pour out in praise.

Lord, harden our hearts
To things of this world.
To turn from our sin
And cherish Your Word.

Protect our hearts, Lord
Our life and wellspring.
Let peace rule today
And grateful hearts sing.

Jeremiah 17:9 The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?

Psalm 51:7 Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Proverbs 4:23 Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.

Wow! Excellent poem! It’s nice to find a break from all of the garbage out there! I am the editor of our church newsletter, The LAMS Light, and there is a poetry section that I like to put real poetry in. Can I have your permission to use this poem in next month’s issue? You can check out the LAMS Light on my blog ( It’s titled “The LAMS Light is here” and let me know if I can use your poem. Check me out

  3. Hi Scotti,

I like how you start out this poem, asking the Lord to soften our hearts to His will, and then later you are asking the Lord to harden our hearts to the things of this world. Indeed, we need God to do both of these things to our hearts. Thanks for sharing another great poem.

  4. I’m a Romanian Christian writer, a poet of Crist. I have s little In English section of Christian poetry on my blog:

  5. Thank the Lord He overlooks the “desperate” wickedness of our hearts, as stated in Jeremiah 17, and by His Spirit enables us to do what’s right! I love, love, love this, Scotti!

  6. Scotti,

I really like this one! Thank you.

  7. I love it! We seldom ask God to care for our hearts—usually we just ask for stuff–but our hearts are His concern. Beautiful Scotti–thank you for this.

  8. Thanks for sharing, your words and this magical picture of the waterfall

  9. It’s like those prayer times that you just go to the ‘heart’ of it all, which is to be humble before the Lord. I so strongly believe that God can do so much in our life if we’re just open and completely honest to Him!!

  10. Missing you! (((((HUGS))))) sandi

  18. Scotti ~ What a wonderful, blessed treasure I have stumbled across in my online ramblings in search of prayer resources… discovering your beautiful poems, music, and pictures has touched MY heart and I hope all is well in the hearts of you and your family in your new home. I also hope you are able to find someone who can retrieve your “lost” files from the crahed computer… it is possible that they are still lurking somewhere on the old HD unless it was a total anhilating meltdown. May God continue to richly bless you and yours’!

Thank you, Barbara! Blessings to you today! Scotti
